SHIELDING ELECTRONIC ASSEMBLIES
EMI shielding with self-adhesive shielding tapes
For EMI shielding, this range includes self-adhesive shielding tapes with different carriers and adhesives. Select them by shielding task, electrical contact and processing requirements; Krückemeyer GmbH will assess suitable converting options with you.

Selection criteria
What needs shielding and electrical contact?
Describe the assembly to be shielded, the contact surfaces and the intended grounding path. The listed products differ in their metallic carriers, coated fabrics and adhesives: 3M ET 1170 uses aluminium foil with a conductive acrylic adhesive, while 3M ET 1181 uses copper foil with a conductive adhesive. 3M ET 1245 has an embossed copper carrier and an adhesive described as non-conductive. A conductive carrier alone therefore does not establish conductivity through the adhesive layer.

SELECTING FOR THE EMI TASK
Align shielding area, electrical contact and cut shape
For an EMI application, the term “shielding” alone does not establish suitability. Check the specific product to see whether its carrier and adhesive provide the intended electrical contact and how the tape will be applied to the assembly. EMI shielding, grounding and protection against electrostatic discharge are separate tasks; only individual products document more than one function. Shielding performance of the complete assembly must be assessed in its actual design.
Krückemeyer GmbH can cut suitable films and tapes to application-specific sizes or process them into die-cut parts. Tell us about the component, contact surfaces, required shape and processing steps so that we can assess the material, geometry and supply format together.

QUESTIONS ABOUT EMI SHIELDING
What does the term EMI shielding tape say about suitability?
It identifies an intended use for shielding against electromagnetic interference, but it does not specify the shielding performance of a completed assembly. The range includes, for example, aluminium and copper foil tapes as well as coated fabric tapes. Their carriers and adhesives differ. The position of the shielding area, the electrical contact and the fit of the selected shape all matter. Product information describes the individual tape; performance in your assembly requires a separate assessment.
When does the adhesive also need to be electrically conductive?
If electrical contact through the adhesive layer forms part of the intended shielding or grounding path, that contact must be documented for the specific product. 3M ET 1170 combines aluminium foil with a conductive acrylic adhesive, and 3M ET 1181 combines copper foil with a conductive adhesive. By contrast, the adhesive of 3M ET 1245 is described as non-conductive, although the product is categorised as a shielding tape. Do not infer electrical contact through the adhesive from the metal carrier or category name alone. Define the contact area and current path for your assembly.
Does an EMI shielding tape automatically provide ESD protection?
No. Electromagnetic shielding and the dissipation of electrostatic discharge are different tasks. An individual product may be intended for both: the product information describes 3M ET 1170 as an aluminium foil tape for EMI shielding, grounding and dissipation of static charge. That statement applies to this product and does not establish the properties of every tape in the listing. Clarify whether your application needs a shielding area, a grounding connection, an ESD path or a combination of these functions.
What information is needed for converted shielding parts?
Specify the assembly, the area to be shielded, the contact surfaces and the required electrical connection. For converting, the shape of the part, the available installation area, the required supply format and the planned processing step are also useful. Krückemeyer GmbH processes suitable films and tapes into cut or die-cut parts. We assess whether a particular starting material and geometry are appropriate for your EMI task against the product information and your application conditions.
