Selection criteria

What temperature profile will the film face?

For an initial selection, distinguish the temperature during processing from the exposure in service. Clarify the duration and any repeated temperature changes, as well as the substrate, adhesive and intended removal. For printed labels, also consider whether the print and adhesion must remain intact under the actual conditions. Suitability can only be assessed for the specific product and complete construction.

SELECTING FOR HEAT EXPOSURE

Select the film by function and complete construction

Printable label films and film tapes used for masking serve different purposes. For the specific product, check the printing method or protective task, temperature profile, adhesion to the substrate and duration of exposure. No general temperature limit can be inferred for the entire range.

For a converted solution, state the required shape, width and supply format. Krückemeyer GmbH assesses the material, geometry and processing in the context of your application.

QUESTIONS ABOUT FILM SELECTION

What makes a self-adhesive film suitable for high temperatures?

Suitability depends on the specific product and the intended temperature profile. The backing, adhesive, surface and exposure during processing and service all matter. The term “high-temperature-resistant” does not define a single temperature limit for every listed product. Check the specifications of the selected film and test the complete construction under your actual operating conditions. For a printed label, the chosen printing method must also suit the film and the process.

Is a listed film suitable for thermal-transfer printing?

The product data describe thermal-transfer printability for the 3M 3922 and 3922DSL film family. This does not apply automatically to every high-temperature-resistant film in the range. If you need a durable label, specify the printing method, substrate and heat exposure. This allows the individual product to be selected from its specifications and the printed result to be checked in your application, rather than inferred from the category name alone.

What information does Krückemeyer need to convert a high-temperature film?

State the film's function, the substrate, the temperatures during processing and service, and the duration and possible changes in exposure. For cutting, the required geometry, width and supply format are important. If the film must be removed later, include that step in the selection. Krückemeyer GmbH can assess the processing against the material and geometry; converting does not automatically change the documented temperature or adhesive properties of the original material.

Do heat resistance, thermal protection and fire resistance mean the same thing?

No. A film intended for elevated temperatures is not automatically an insulating material, fire resistant or approved for fire protection. Each of these properties requires its own product evidence and relevant test conditions. First identify the actual task: labelling, masking, thermal separation or another function. Then compare only the documented properties of the relevant product and have its suitability for the intended use assessed.
