Check construction and adhesive sides before selection

The listed 3M spacer films include polyester carriers with adhesive on one or both sides. For a membrane switch, consider the spacing between layers, the shape of the switch areas and which side must bond to which component. Check the stated total thickness without liners, carrier color and adhesive construction in each product record.

SELECTING SPACER FILM

Which spacer film suits the layer construction?

A spacer film keeps the layers of a membrane switch apart; cutouts allow the intended electrical contact. The manufacturer describes both double sided adhesive polyester films and single sided adhesive versions for this purpose. Check whether both adjacent layers need to be bonded or only one adhesive side is required. Carrier thickness and adhesive layers together determine the total thickness of the specific product.

For converting, the cutouts, outer shape, adhesive side positions and required supplied format matter. Krückemeyer GmbH can adapt cutting or die cut parts to the material and application. Use the consultation form to specify the layer construction, required geometry and processing steps; suitability must be checked for the specific product.

QUESTIONS ABOUT SPACER FILMS

What does a spacer film do in a membrane switch?

It separates the layers of a membrane switch and maintains the spacing required for its switching function. Cutouts in the film define where contact can occur when the switch is pressed. The manufacturer describes different polyester carriers and adhesive constructions for this purpose. Suitable geometry and thickness depend on the actual switch design; the film alone does not determine how the complete assembly performs.

How do single sided and double sided adhesive spacer films differ?

The number of adhesive sides determines whether the spacer film bonds to one or both adjacent layers. The range includes versions with adhesive on both sides and single sided adhesive polyester films. Before selecting a product, establish which layer needs to be fixed and how the film will be aligned during assembly. Check the adhesive side and liner of the specific product record.

Why does spacer film thickness matter?

It affects the spacing between the membrane switch layers. For selection, use the total thickness of the specific product without its liner; the carrier and adhesive layers both contribute to that figure. The manufacturer's information shows different constructions, so carrier thickness must not be treated as total thickness. Check the required gap against your design and the actual product.

What information is needed for cutting or a die cut part?

A drawing of the outer shape and cutouts, the layer construction, required spacing and both adjacent surfaces will help. Include the preferred supplied format and your planned processing step. Krückemeyer GmbH can cut suitable materials or process them into die cut parts. We assess whether the chosen spacer film and geometry suit your application against the specific requirements.
