SELF-ADHESIVE ALUMINUM FOIL
Self-adhesive aluminum foil: choose by construction and function
Self-adhesive aluminum foil combines an aluminum backing with an adhesive layer. The right version depends on the substrate, intended function and processing: a foil for labeling has different requirements from a tape for electrical shielding.
01
Selection criteria
What should the aluminum foil do?
Start with the function on the component: should the aluminum surface carry a label, or is an electrical connection or shielding required? The assigned range includes versions with different adhesives and liners. For electrical use, the aluminum backing alone is not evidence of a conductive connection; the adhesive layer and contact arrangement must also suit the task.

CHOOSING BY CONSTRUCTION
Assess backing, adhesive and processing together
Self-adhesive aluminum foil is not a single functional class. The aluminum backing, type of adhesive and any protective liner jointly affect handling. A writable, matte silver surface is documented for 3M Aluminiumfolie 7800; 3M ET 1170, by contrast, uses a conductive adhesive for shielding and grounding tasks. A property of one version does not automatically apply to another.
Before enquiring, clarify the substrate, contact point, temperature profile and required supply format. Suitability for cutting or further converting depends on the specific material construction; the manufacturer's information expressly says that 3M 7800 is unsuitable for die cutting. State the dimensions, shape and processing step in the enquiry form so that a suitable version can be assessed.

ALUMINUM FOIL QUESTIONS
How can I identify self-adhesive aluminum foil for electrical shielding?
Check the complete product construction and the properties stated for the shielding task. An aluminum backing alone does not establish a conductive path through the adhesive. A conductive adhesive is expressly specified for 3M ET 1170; other aluminum foils may be designed for a different purpose. The contact area, substrate and intended grounding therefore matter as well. Have the specific version assessed against its product data and your application.
What details matter when choosing self-adhesive aluminum foil?
First state the foil's task and the substrate to which it will be applied. The adhesive, aluminum backing, surface, protective liner, temperature profile and required supply format then guide product selection. These details help distinguish a version for labeling from one with a conductive adhesive. Dimensions and shape also matter for later processing. Suitability depends on the specific product construction and the conditions on your component.
Can every self-adhesive aluminum foil be supplied as a die-cut part?
No. Processability depends on the foil construction, adhesive, liner and required shape. The manufacturer's information on 3M Aluminiumfolie 7800 expressly states that it is unsuitable for die cutting. A similar appearance therefore does not justify a general promise of shaped parts. Tell us the width, shape, quantity needed and subsequent processing step. We can assess whether cutting or another suitable supply format is possible for the selected material.
Do all aluminum foils have the same temperature resistance?
No. Temperature ratings apply to the specific version and the test conditions described by the manufacturer. The aluminum backing, adhesive, substrate and duration of exposure must be considered separately; a property of the metal alone does not describe the bonded assembly. The range contains different product constructions. Compare the temperature information for the particular item with your process and state both the operating temperature and exposure time in your enquiry.
